4 Common Diesel Problems and How to Fix Them

by | Jan 4, 2023

Whether you’re a new diesel driver or you’ve been operating diesel engines for years, it’s important to understand a little bit about common diesel problems you may encounter. After all, the more you know about how your vehicle operates, the better equipped you’ll be to keep it running smoothly and safely.

Today, we’re going to walk you through a few of the most common diesel problems we’ve seen at our Tempe auto repair shop. Then, we’ll show you some solutions so you can be back on the road as soon as possible.

Common Diesel Problems Every Diesel Owner Should Be Aware Of

1. Oil oxidation

It’s likely that you already understand the importance of regular oil changes and keeping your car’s oil clean and free of debris. With diesel engines, however, there’s one more thing to remember … The oil must also be kept free of air. When exposed to oxygen, a chemical reaction occurs that causes the oil to thicken and be less effective as an engine lubricant. Poor lubrication can then lead to engine damage or complete engine failure.

2. Strange engine noises

Some diesel owners will tell you that the roar of a diesel engine is one of its most attractive features. But, that doesn’t mean that every engine noise is normal. In fact, if you hear a banging noise, the engine sounds uneven, or you notice any other abnormal sound, there’s a good chance there’s an underlying problem such as a faulty fuel injector. Whenever your diesel engine sounds different, it’s a good idea to get it evaluated by a qualified diesel mechanic.

3. An engine that fails to start or is difficult to start

One of the most common diesel problems is difficulty starting the vehicle, especially during the winter if you live in a colder climate. The cause could be low compression, a fuel delivery issue, or another problem that may affect your engine’s performance and efficiency.

4. Improper fueling

Did you know that putting gasoline into a diesel engine can cause serious damage to engine parts? Even though you know better, it’s actually easier to do than you think, especially if you’re in a hurry. Always pay close attention to which fuel you’re using at the pump. Otherwise, you could be in for an expensive repair such as a new diesel engine.

How to Fix Common Diesel Problems

It’s important to realize that the diesel problems we’ve mentioned are not the only issues you may face with your diesel-powered vehicle. However, they are some of the most common diesel problems we’ve seen at our Tempe auto repair shop. Now, how exactly do you fix them?

1. Be aware of common diesel problems.

It may sound obvious but the only way you can fix a problem is by first recognizing that one exists. No matter what type of vehicle you drive, pay attention to anything that sounds, looks, smells, or feels different than usual. When you’re aware of common diesel problems and notice that something is out of place, schedule an appointment with your diesel mechanic as soon as possible. It’s often easier and cheaper to fix problems while they’re small … before they become bigger, more expensive ones.

2. Avoid common diesel problems with preventative maintenance.

One of the best ways to solve a problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place. When you follow a routine diesel maintenance schedule, maintenance items will be completed at regular intervals and may prevent common diesel problems from plaguing you later on.

3. Schedule repairs with an expert diesel mechanic.

Automotive technicians who are specifically trained to work on diesel engines are the best people to solve both common diesel problems and more complex ones. That’s because they have the knowledge and tools to get the job done right and efficiently.
