Holiday Travel Starts with Preventative Maintenance

by | Dec 12, 2016

gwar-holiday-travelIf you’re like thousands of other Americans, you’re probably preparing for holiday travel this Christmas season. Most long-distance holiday travel, about 91 percent, is by personal vehicle, such as by car. Only 5 to 6 percent of holiday trips are by air, while 2 to 3 percent are by bus, train, ship, or other mode of transportation. With that being said, there will be a lot of vehicles on the road this winter and we hope that you have prepared your vehicle before heading out. A vehicle without a holiday travel tune-up with complete preventative maintenance is more likely to break down and that is a really quick way to ruin your holidays.

According to one expert, there are a number of different vehicle components to prepare for holiday travel. First, you’ll want to make sure that your lights are working properly; this includes high and low beams, flashers, directional signals, brake lights and even your license plate light. It is also important to make sure your wiper blades are in good shape. When is the last time you replaced yours? Our tests have found that even the best-performing blades can be ready for retirement in as little as six months and here in the hot Arizona sun, even sooner. Cracks, tears, streaking, and missed spots are all sure signs that your wiper blades need replaced. While you’re thinking about your blades, also be sure to fill up with windshield washer fluid and store a gallon in the trunk, to ensure you are never stranded without it. If it gets really cold where you’ll be traveling, be sure to switch to washer fluid with an antifreeze agent – never wait until you run out because not being able to clean a dirty windshield is exceptionally dangerous!

Another fluid to have checked is in your engine coolant, which is too often neglected and can lead to some serious complications. It is also a good idea to have your repair shop check the radiator and heater hoses for cracks and leaks.

When have you had your battery checked? At 0° F, your battery has only half of the cranking power it has at 80 degrees. And all batteries lose strength as they age, so don’t take any chances. Finally, check your tire pressure. Underinflated tires cause unsafe handling and braking.

All of these components keep you and your vehicle safe. Tow truck operators in resort areas or along interstate highways see all too many travelers forced to return home ahead of schedule. Car trouble, usually due to neglected preventative maintenance, brings an abrupt and disappointing end to vacation plans.

If you’re in the Tempe or Mesa areas, we want to see you before you head out on your trip, not because your vehicle has broken down. We offer a complete preventative maintenance check-up where we will be sure to check lights and fluids and wipers and everything else you’ll need to avoid breakdowns or costly repairs. Contact us today and make an appointment to get in before you head out on your holiday road-trip. Happy Holidays from all of us here in your trusted auto repair shop!
