Busting Preventative Maintenance Myths: Your Guide to Smarter Car Care

by | Jun 4, 2024

When it comes to auto repair and maintenance, what you don’t know CAN hurt you (or at least your vehicle). Similarly, what you THINK you know could actually lead to higher repair bills and unnecessary maintenance services if you’re being guided by the wrong information. While routine vehicle care is essential for driving safety and extending your vehicle’s lifespan, preventative maintenance myths are everywhere.

If you don’t understand the TRUTH, you could easily be led down the wrong path. Here, we’ll debunk some of these common myths and set the record straight. Then, you’ll have a clearer picture of what you need to do to keep your vehicle in top shape.

Preventative Maintenance Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

Myth #1: Oil changes are necessary every 3,000 miles.

Truth: Oil changes every 3,000 miles were probably the norm when your parents got their first car. However, engine technology and oil quality advancements have significantly increased the interval between oil changes. In fact, many of today’s vehicles can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles, or even more, between oil changes. If you’re not sure what’s best for YOUR vehicle, simply ask your trusted mechanic or check your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

Myth #2: Premium fuel will improve your vehicle’s performance.

Truth: Premium fuel is not necessarily better for your car. Most vehicles are designed to run on regular unleaded gasoline. Using premium fuel in a car that doesn’t require it is a waste of money and won’t improve performance or fuel efficiency. Only use premium fuel if your vehicle’s manufacturer explicitly recommends it.

Myth #3: Car batteries last 5 years, regardless of conditions.

Truth: A car battery’s lifespan depends on a variety of factors. These include climate, driving habits, and maintenance, just to name a few. Under ideal conditions, most car batteries can last 3-5 years. When exposed to extreme temperatures, such as what we experience during our Arizona summers, that lifespan can be significantly reduced.

Myth #4: You should always replace all 4 tires at the same time.

Truth: While it’s ideal to replace all four tires simultaneously for even wear and performance, it’s not always necessary. If only one or two tires are worn out, you can replace just those. This is especially true if the remaining tires are relatively new. However, ensure that the new tires are the same type and size as the old ones to maintain balanced handling and traction.

Myth #5: Maintenance is only necessary when you notice something wrong.

Truth: While this is probably one of THE most common preventative maintenance myths, it’s simply not true. The old adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” does NOT apply to vehicles! The truth is that regular, routine maintenance at scheduled intervals can actually PREVENT things from going wrong in many cases. What exactly should be done and when? Simply follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule or listen to what your trusted mechanic advises.
